Learning Japanese App Reviews

I started learning Japanese on Tae Kims web site, which is terrific. So I was happy to find an app like this. But the app itself could use an update. The big black tab on the left side of the screen is obtrusive and unnecessary. I like that I can tap on a kanji and get its meaning and reading, but it should stay up on the screen until Im finished reading it. This app could benefit greatly from some small changes.

I took Japanese classs in college and downloaded this app to brush up on on the language. It has been almost nine years since my last class and I recently found out we are moving to Japan. The structure of these lessons seem great, but I am disappointed by the content. This app only teaches informal Japanese, which is almost NEVER appropriate for foreigners to use. I am able to substitute more formal speech into these lessons myself, but a beginner would not know this.

Ive just begun to scratch the surface of this app, which I hoped would supplement current lessons and previous knowledge. I was surprised this teaches very casual grammar from the beginning. Honestly, its best to learn how to be polite before learning to speak so casually, as I have had to undo old bad habits when in Japan because it can be offensive to speak so casually to strangers. It does go into more polite forms much later, but keep in mind whats taught in the first section is seriously for friends or less polite company.

I love how this app avoids using romaji. It helps me get used to reading kana and kanji. Also, the lessons are very detailed and easy to understand. My most useful app for learning japanese!

The most amazing tutorial for the Japanese writing systems

While I dont particularly want to learn Kanji, it is a good app. Maybe if I had more time on my hands I would learn Kanji

I was a complete beginner and yet this app taught me stuffs that makes sense for a complete noob like me! Simple and detailed. The author and developer are freakin awesome! I am now able to play Japanese games like muosu orochi Z without using the English patch at all! Awesome! Thank you!

The author is a great writer, possesses a great mind. Hes clear, concise, organized, and coherent. He has an expansive view of linguistics, specifically the Japanese and English languages. Ive yet to uncover every lesson, but already I can the author is well-versed and acutely knowledgable. I cant wait to go through every corner of his words and lessons.

Solid resource to help learn Japanese.

I cant tell you how awesome this app is. It has stroke order which in other apps you usually have to pay for but for here its free and other such free things....and with good quality!!! It has an abundance of grammar lessons organized very neatly and with thorough explanations and things to watch out for. They even go as far as to give you links for other sources if you need them. Very well thought out! They definitely kept the new learner in mind as well as older ones. They managed to accommodate both very nicely.

This app is so cool! It gives you lessons, videos, charts, and all of it is free! (I think) I really want to learn Japanese, and Im pretty sure this will help. A lot. Goooooooooooooooo Japanese!!

Im using this app as a complete stranger to Japanese linguistics, and so far I honestly cant imagine a better way to teach myself this beautiful language. 5 stars across the board.

This is a great app for learning Japanese. It teaches a more casual way of speaking, which is soooo nice since most methods teach you the formal way of speaking. The only thing I would like to see is the ability to pinch and pull to zoom in and out. Some of the characters can be hard to see easily on smaller devices. Speaking of characters, if you tap on a kanji character, it pops up the meaning and the hiragana! How cool is that!?

Its an amazing tool that has worked wonders for me. I would love to see split screen support in order to run it side by side with other language tools Im using. I sincerely hope the support for this app isnt over. But as it is, it is fully functional. The exercises are great, and I love that it doesnt use romaji. Its a legit learning tool. I do wish it had pronunciation audio to help you pronounce the words youre learning. Still a five star app as it is.

I love the app so far being that I barely got and am barely starting to use it however theres something that should be fixed and thats that some of the video links dont work while others do. Please fix those links, cause if theres stuff in the videos thats not in the app then Ill be missing out on info that I probably need. Aside from that I love this app.

Very well written Japanese grammar guide! Very clear in every points. Very useful for my study! The original app design is also pretty good. My only complaint for this app is that its not optimized to work in newer bigger iPhone models. But its never updated after 2012...
